Owners Kristy Martin, a registered nurse, and her husband Craig Weaver, who owns a commercial construction company, currently live at the house with their 16-year-old twins and 13-year-old daughter.

Kristy and Craig had initially planned to build in nearby Kings Park but fell in love with the house at 27 Wood Street, Millswood.

“We bought this property six years ago and we fell in love with it. I mean, it wasn’t obviously perfect, but we’ve made it perfect for us,” says Kristy.

“The location is amazing. It’s just a short walk to King William Road with bars and restaurants.”

Kristy says that she and her husband Craig were also drawn to the house because it has a modern feel and amenities while also having heritage-style architecture that seamlessly fits into the historic neighbourhood.

“We had a 1925 bungalow in the past, which was lovely and we loved the character of it, but we also like more of a modern feel,” she says.

“A lot of people are fooled into thinking it is an old home.”

The home was designed by Rudi Ahmer and built in 2012 by Heritage Building Group.

On walking into 27 Wood Street, Millswood, your attention will immediately be drawn to the statement entrance, the spacious hallway with decorative arches and the high ceilings.

“It’s just got this really good feel when you walk in. It’s got really high ceilings, it’s got a beautiful established garden that’s low maintenance,” says Kristy.

Stepping into the back half of the dwelling, you feel as though you are entering a completely different house.

The ultra-modern family room features an open plan living and dining area with a gas fireplace, timber feature wall and a kitchen boasting all the most up-to-date appliances.

The living area also has large bi-fold windows that look onto a backyard with an established garden, outdoor kitchen and swimming pool.

Co-owner Kristy says that one of the unique features of the house is that each of the four bedrooms includes an ensuite, adding that she loves how the master suite is separate from the other bedrooms and looks onto the lush established garden and pool.

Over the six years they have lived there, Kristy and Craig have also carried out renovations to the house to make it feel more their own.

They enlisted Alisa and Lysandra Interior Design, best known as winners of The Block in 2013, to redesign certain elements of the home.

This included extending the kitchen bench with stone, adding in bench seating, replacing the lights with contemporary fittings, installing a timber feature wall and adding a stone fireplace.

They also put parquetry timber flooring in the master bedroom, which leads onto the swimming pool and updated the outdoor kitchen area with a new barbecue, countertops and cupboards.

Although Kristy and Craig both love Wood Street, they have decided to take on a new challenge and renovate a house nearby.

“We’re not moving far because we obviously love the area so much, but … [my husband] wants to do his own build,” says Kristy.

“We’ve bought something that we can renovate because he has obviously got contacts, being in the building industry.”

Kristy says what they will miss most about the house is its location and openness.

“It’s so light and bright and airy. You can open up all the bi-folds so it’s indoor-outdoor living,” she says.

“The back view is just lovely, we’re just surrounded by trees and it’s so serene and quiet, but you’re close to the city.

“It’s just been an absolute pleasure living here. It’s a great little pocket in Millswood.”
