FEATURE LISTING: Queen Anne villa in exclusive Medindie

Built circa 1900, this Queen Anne villa stands out among the plethora of Victorian houses located in the exclusive eastern suburb of Medindie. This week, it’s on sale for the first time in 25 years.

Current owner Philippa Williams, who is a high-end travel agent, and her husband, bought 76 Hawkers Road in 1999.

“We had come from Sydney and we had been looking for a house in Sydney … [we] came to Adelaide and couldn’t believe the beautiful houses that we could find here,” says Philippa.

“We were driving down Hawkers Road. We weren’t sure where we were looking. I just did a U-Turn and we were right in front of the house.

“It was the only house we looked at – the best one. We got an inspection that weekend, had a look through, absolutely loved it and took it off the market on the spot.”

The return-verandah Queen Anne is full of history and is located near the parklands, sought-after schools, cafes and restaurants on Melbourne and O’Connell streets.

“With the horse park at the end of Hawkers Road – you feel like you’re in the country … it’s beautiful,” Philippa says.

“The location is just so good for being at school and being part of the little community here. There’s a little rose park at the corner of Dutton Terrace and Hawkers Road and for years we had Christmas drinks there with the people that lived at this end of Hawkers Road.

“Originally, there was the wall of an old horse stable to the rear of the property … they used to milk up the back lanes.”

Inside this single-storey family home are four bedrooms, a music room, a spacious laundry, a cellar, a study and an open-plan kitchen, living and dining area.

The master suite includes an ensuite and a beautiful arched window that looks onto the front garden.

The outdoor area includes a deck with a pool and outdoor entertaining area, while the low-maintenance garden is the perfect place to have a picnic on a warm summer’s day.

Philippa says her favourite part of the house is the music room featuring a cello and grand piano, where she recently held a concert for friends.

“There’s quite a grand room that was the formal dining room. When we bought the house, it had a beautiful long dining table set up, but we turned it into a music room because my background was in music,” she said

“We recently had a concert in that room with me on piano and my girlfriend whom I studied music with. She was an opera singer. She was singing and her husband was on drums.

“We always have curtains open because of the beautiful greenery that you see from inside the room – it’s just a lovely, peaceful, beautiful room with a fireplace.”

Philippa says she also loves the front courtyard area with its six-metre-high viburnum.

“It’s a beautiful area at the front of the home. It’s very peaceful,” she says.

Despite some of her friends calling them “mad” for wanting to sell their Medindie home, Philippa says now that their kids have grown up, she and her husband are looking for a new lifestyle near the beach.

“When we came here from Sydney, the choices were Hills, city or beach, and we’ve just decided beach,” she says.

The sale of 76 Hawkers Road, Medindie is being handled by Kirsty Davies from Fox Real Estate.
